Runner rugs
Runners protect hallway, kitchen and entryway floors and guide the eye down a narrow space. Leave 4–6 inches of floor on each side of the runner and stop it short of doorways so doors open freely. Measure your hallway’s length and subtract about 1–2 feet to choose a runner length; standard runners run from 2′ × 6′ to 2′ × 12′. Washable and indoor/outdoor runners are the easiest to keep clean in kitchens.

Open size guideChoosing an area rug
Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
