Patio rugs
A patio rug defines an outdoor seating or dining area the same way a rug does indoors. Size it like a living room rug, with at least the front legs of the furniture on it, or like a dining rug, extending about 24 inches past the table. Choose solution-dyed polypropylene: it resists fading in sun, dries quickly after rain and cleans with a hose. Under a covered patio a rug can stay out most of the year; on an open patio, let it dry fully after rain and store it over winter to extend its life. Every rug on this page is rated indoor/outdoor.

Open size guideChoosing an area rug
Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
