Jute rugs
Jute rugs bring natural, textured warmth to living rooms, bedrooms and studies. Jute is a plant fiber, so it feels firm and slightly coarse underfoot and sheds a little at first. A good jute rug can last five to ten years in moderate traffic, but it wears faster under dining chairs and in doorways and should be kept dry: blot spills right away and don’t use it outdoors or in bathrooms. Jute blends mix in other fibers for a softer feel. Vacuum without a beater bar and use a rug pad on hard floors.

Choosing an area rug
Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
