Handmade rugs

Handmade rugs are made by artisans with hand tools and hand looms rather than power looms. “Handmade” covers several techniques: hand-knotted rugs have every knot tied by hand and take the longest to make; hand-tufted rugs are made by punching yarn through a backing with a hand-held tool; hand-woven and flat-woven rugs are woven on a hand loom. Each technique gives a different texture and price. Handmade rugs can vary from the listed size by a few inches, so allow a small margin when measuring tight spaces, and expect light shedding from new wool rugs.

Handmade rugs: common questions

What’s the difference between handmade and hand-knotted?

Hand-knotted rugs have every knot tied by hand, take longest to make and last decades. “Handmade” also includes hand-tufted and hand-woven rugs, which are faster to make and usually cost less.

Are handmade rug sizes exact?

Not always; handmade rugs can vary from the listed size by a few inches.

Do handmade wool rugs shed?

Lightly at first; regular vacuuming reduces it within weeks.

Choosing an area rug

Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
