Dining room rugs
A dining room rug should be big enough that every chair stays on it when pulled out from the table. Measure your table and add about 24 inches on every side: a table for four usually needs a 6′ × 9′ or 8′ × 10′ rug, and a table for six to eight needs a 9′ × 12′. Round tables look best on round rugs with the same 24-inch margin. Low, flat or tightly woven piles let chairs slide easily and are simpler to clean under a table, so polypropylene and flat-weave rugs are practical choices here. Dining room rugs: common questions
What size rug goes under a dining table?
One that extends about 24″ past the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
What’s the best rug material for a dining room?
Low-pile or flat-weave polypropylene, because chairs slide easily and spills clean up quickly.
Should a dining room rug be round or rectangular?
Match the table: a round rug under a round table, a rectangular rug under a rectangular or oval table.

Open size guideChoosing an area rug
Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
