Bedroom rugs
A bedroom rug gives you a soft first step every morning. Place it under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending 18–24 inches past each side, and leave the nightstands on the floor. That means an 8′ × 10′ for a queen bed and a 9′ × 12′ for a king. For a smaller room, a pair of runners on either side of the bed does the same job for less. Plush, high-pile and wool rugs feel best underfoot here, since bedrooms see less traffic than living rooms.

Open size guideChoosing an area rug
Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
