9x12 area rugs
A 9′ × 12′ rug is the choice for large and open-plan living rooms, king beds and dining tables for six to eight. In a living room it holds the whole seating group, with all furniture legs on the rug; under a king bed it extends well past each side. This page also includes 8′6″ × 11′6″ and 9′3″ × 12′7″ rugs that fill the same spaces. A 9′ × 12′ suits rooms of about 12′ × 15′ and up, leaving 12–18 inches of bare floor around the edge.

Start with size: in a living room, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor around the rug and tuck at least the front legs of your sofa onto it. Then narrow by color and style, and add a rug pad to keep it in place.
